A mayor used social media to launch a series of offensive criticisms against “macumbeiros”, an expression normally used to refer to practitioners of African-based religionslike Candomblé.

In his publication, Ildo de Souza (PSDB) implied that he was responding to some type of reaction from former civil servants: “Whoever lost his tits must really defend the things of the devil because here it was the devil’s thing”, he wrote the politician in a post.

“The truth hurts and the poorer in spirit, the friendlier the devil is”, added the manager. At the beginning, he stated that “macumbeiros have a pact with the Devil (…) they will burn in the fires of hell along with their little friends of the Devil (…) I have never seen macumbeiro do good (…) and those who do macumba are evil people”.

Ildo is mayor of Glicério, a municipality located in the interior of São Paulo. After the repercussion of his post, a teacher reported him to the Public Ministry on suspicion of religious intolerance.

“I and my brothers of faith are tired of being labeled as evil people. People who incite violence and hatred against African-based religion are unpleasant. The mayor has no right to condemn people who follow this religion as children of the Devil. This is unacceptable”, argued the complainant, according to the G1.

Reports

Mayor Ildo de Souza’s post was made on the 10th, and the complaint was filed on the 12th. The Araçatuba Civil Police investigated the case.

In a note published on social media, Ildo denied that he had committed intolerance against practitioners of African-based religions. He said he respected religious diversity, explaining that his post targeted only those who use evil with the aim of attacking him.

“It is extremely important to consider that, in reality, my post aimed to highlight the manipulation of legitimate beliefs by people contrary to my political stance, who use inappropriate rituals to promote targeted attacks on my family”, he argued. See too:
