jpnn.comJAKARTA – The Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, delivered sharp statements in her introductory speech at the joint session of the DPR and DPD at the MPR/DPR/DPD RI Building, Jakarta, Friday (16/8).

In the forum attended by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Vice President Ma’ruf Amin, Puan said that Indonesia needs a politician who has a statesmanlike attitude in carrying out the practice of power politics.

“To carry out the practice of political power, in a presidential system of government, with a balance of branches of power, we need statesmen who are politicians and politicians who are statesmen,” said Puan.

The first woman to serve as the speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives said that a statesman would think about the future of the country which must be better, while politicians would think about the future of the election results which must be better.

The grandson of Indonesian proclaimer Soekarno (Bung Karno) in his speech also touched on arbitrary power.

“Vision without power will be in vain and power without vision will be arbitrary,” said the former Coordinating Minister for PMK.

Therefore, Puan assessed that if led by someone who has a statesmanlike attitude and a political soul, state power will be exercised for the welfare of the people.

“State power is exercised for the greater good, not to aggrandize oneself, a group, or certain interests,” said the owner of the full name Puan Maharani Nakshatra Kusyala Devi.
