Real Madrid’s title ambitions have hit a snag: Kylian Mbappé is facing approximately three weeks on the sidelines with a knee injury.

The French superstar suffered damage to the external ligament of his knee, according to information revealed on Wednesday. While the issue had been present for some time, its severity wasn’t fully understood until an MRI scan clarified the diagnosis.

The timing is particularly unfortunate, as Mbappé was enjoying a sensational run of form. Just last week, on December 20, he etched his name into the record books by scoring his 59th goal of the calendar year against Sevilla, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo’s previous high.

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso acknowledged the significant impact of Mbappé’s absence. “When Mbappé is not on the pitch, his absence is felt,” Alonso conceded at a recent press conference. “We had enough chances to score that second goal, but when it’s not your turn, it doesn’t matter how hard you try.”

Mbappé will miss crucial upcoming matches, including league fixtures against Betis Sevilla, Atlético Madrid, and Levante, as well as a Champions League clash with AS Monaco.

Prior to the diagnosis, Mbappé had been enjoying a break during the winter period, traveling to Rabat, Morocco, to support his friend Achraf Hakimi at the African Cup of Nations match between Morocco and Mali.
