He Parliamentary Group of the Citizen Movement (MC) presented an initiative in the capital’s Congress to consolidate the Law on the Comprehensive Care System of Mexico Citywhich seeks to give citizens access to the right to care for themselves, care for and be cared for, in addition to recognizing the work of the people who carry out this task.

The coordinator of the orange bench in the local Congress, Royfid Torres, He explained that the initiative responds to one of the biggest pending issues that the city has and a historical debt to recognize the sector of the population that is dedicated to caring for other people, as well as those who receive this type of services.

“Many people still do not understand that the daily activities they carry out, beyond the emotional bonds they create, constitute unpaid work; caring is not only an act of love, it is a commitment that often means giving one’s life for another person. Let us ask ourselves how much this work is worth, what is given when one cares and how much effort, time and sacrifice it represents.”Torres said.

In this regard, she submitted to the other congressmen for consideration the scope that the initiative would have, since it speaks of more than 60% of the population; however, she pointed out that beyond a figure, what should be valued is that care is an action that affects all people at different stages and spaces of daily life.

The member of the MC added that inequality in Mexico City also involves the time spent on unpaid care work by women, which is about 50 hours a week, more than an average work day; tasks that, he added, are equivalent to 10% of the capital’s Gross Domestic Product.

The coordinator of the orange bench said that with the initiative the bases for the discussion in the capital’s Congress are laid; and he highlighted that those who competed to head the city’s leadership committed to address the issue, which is why he considered it to be a first stone to install the care system that Mexico City requires.
