When advertising goes viral, the company is usually happy. For McDonald’s, however, the placement of a poster was extremely uncomfortable. The group drew consequences.

It’s one of those pictures you see on social media every day. An everyday motif that, on closer inspection, turns out to be funny, bizarre or problematic – and that’s why it’s spreading en masse. The image of a McDonald’s advertisement in Cornwall also brought the group a lot of negative attention. And is therefore now removed.

At first glance, the picture appears inconspicuous. At a bus stop in a small town in the UK, there is an advertisement for the fast food chain’s special burger. The fact that the Internet is either amused or upset about this is due to the broader context. The poster shows the “McCrispy”, a particularly crispy fried chicken burger. And right next to it, a sign points the way to the local crematorium.

McDonald’s advertising between humor and outrage

The everyday observation posted by the local newspaper “Cornwall Live” found a mostly amused audience on social networks. “As an undertaker, I find that hilarious,” quipped a user on Reddit. Many praised the “brilliant campaign”, speculating that the burger chain deliberately chose the location. Many spin the absurdity further, much more tasteless puns. Many of the amused Internet users noticed that it was definitely worthy of criticism. “When the advertising is tasteless, but it tastes so good,” quipped a Reddit user.

But not everyone shared the excitement. When “Cornwall Live” surveyed the local citizens, there were quickly those who thought little of the placement. “I can definitely see the joke,” said one resident. “But it’s still in bad taste towards the grieving relatives.” A local resident remarked: “How funny you find it also depends on the last time you had to walk past it in a black tie.”

When faced with the jokes about the poster, however, McDonald’s reacted quickly. The company was not aware of the proximity of the poster area to the crematorium, a spokesman for the company told several media outlets. “In view of the concerns, however, we have asked for the advertising to be removed.” The internet responded as you’d expect – with more jokes. A successor would be Burger King’s flame-grilled Whopper, several users grinned.
