A computer malfunction causes problems for McDonald’s. Thousands of restaurants are now at risk of going out of business.

A computer malfunction at McDonald’s has brought numerous branches of the fast-food restaurant chain to a standstill in several countries. German locations are also affected. “There have been occasional technical disruptions in our restaurants. The problem has now been resolved,” a spokeswoman for the fast food chain told the German Press Agency on Friday in Munich.

Media had previously reported disruptions in Japan and other countries. “There is a technical disruption that is impacting our restaurants,” the US company said. The company is working on a solution. However, McDonald’s ruled out a hacker attack. The spokeswoman for the German arm of the restaurant chain also emphasized that it was not a “cybersecurity event”.

According to the Japanese division, many branches are no longer accepting orders due to the interruption. The disruption is also affecting the branches in Australia, according to the headquarters there. The New York Times also reported on a computer system failure at McDonald’s in Hong Kong, and according to a report in the New Zealand Herald, there are also IT problems in New Zealand. Accordingly, functions are either restricted or customers cannot place orders at all.

The cause of the disruption initially remained unclear. McDonald’s operates nearly 3,000 stores in Japan, about 1,000 branches in Australia, about 245 locations in Hong Kong and more than 160 restaurants in New Zealand, according to their respective regions’ websites.
