You can find them on almost every table. In this McDonald’s in the center of Paris, this Thursday at lunchtime, the Mc Smart, the low cost menu launched in December, is delighting numerous customers. “For 5 euros they give us two hamburgers, a fries, a drink… It’s good and not expensive, we like it a lot”, summarize Clémence and Flora. The two high school girls just devoured one each, as they do “twice a week”. A little further on, Maxence also confirms that he is an assiduous follower of this type of formula. However, he did his market research. “It’s better at Burger King, there’s dessert,” compares the young prep student to cinema.
5 euro offers in fast food restaurants are nothing new. They have been around for a long time, but their price promise has not always been kept in the long term. Many were gradually abandoned before inflation, which has hit portfolios hard since 2022, brought them back. “It works particularly well at lunchtime in the city centre, with workers and young people,” comments one market observer. It’s no surprise when, in the sandwich shop opposite, the simple ham and butter is displayed… for 5.70 euros.
