McDonald’s restaurants will replace plastic toys with cardboard

by time news

Fast food chain McDonald’s has announced plans to substantially reduce the use of plastics to make toys by 2025, which usually comes with Happy Meals for kids.

McDonald’s is partnering with toy makers to develop new ideas – for example, creating a set of cardboard parts from which children can assemble three-dimensional “superhero” figures, or board games, the chips of which will be made from plant-based or recyclable materials.

The chain sells around a billion toys a year worldwide. The new plan calls for a 90% reduction in plastic use compared to 2018 levels. Certain steps in this direction have already been taken. In England and Ireland, McDonald’s restaurants only offer stuffed toys or books to children. This year, plastic toys have ceased to be offered in France.

Toys make up only a very small fraction of the plastic used by the net. The plans provide by 2025 to completely switch to the production of packaging from environmentally friendly materials. The company is also working to reduce the use of plastic straws, bags and utensils (knives, spoons and forks) and plans to use recycled plastic for its trays.
