McDonald’s to Remove Self-Serve Soda Machines by 2032

New York, CNN – In a recent announcement, McDonald’s revealed that it will be getting rid of one of its biggest perks: self-serve soda machines. The fast food chain plans to eliminate these machines at its US restaurants by 2032, aiming to provide a consistent experience for both customers and crew members.

For decades, McDonald’s has allowed customers to fill and refill their own beverages at its dining rooms. However, due to changing consumer behavior, particularly following the pandemic, the chain has seen a surge in business through its drive-thru and delivery services, resulting in fewer people choosing to eat in its dining rooms. As a result, the need for self-serve soda machines has significantly decreased.

McDonald’s has acknowledged these changes and is adapting its future restaurant designs accordingly. The company is now focusing on smaller or even no dining rooms, along with high-tech drive-thrus, to cater to the new reality. According to its most recent earnings report, digital sales, including orders made through the McDonald’s app or through partners like Uber, now account for 40% of its total sales.

In addition to these changes, McDonald’s has also teased another major shift called “CosMc’s.” This new small-format location will include a reduced dining area, aligning with the company’s plan to cater to locations with less demand for in-restaurant dining.

CEO Chris Kempczinski discussed the company’s development opportunities during an analyst briefing in June, stating, “There’s a number of places around the US where we are significantly underdeveloped relative to where the population exists today. That opens up for us a whole bunch of development opportunities for us to go after.”

Previously, McDonald’s had deemed removing dining rooms as “off limits.” However, the changing habits of customers since the peak of the pandemic have prompted the company to reconsider. Although McDonald’s has not disclosed further details about the “CosMc” concept, it is clear that the chain is determined to adapt to the evolving preferences of its customers.

McDonald’s is not the only fast food chain exploring new designs and concepts. Other major players in the industry, such as Chipotle, Taco Bell, and Starbucks, are also experimenting with reinventing their restaurant layouts to meet the demands of modern consumers.

As McDonald’s continues to evolve and reshape its dining experience, the fast food giant remains committed to providing convenient and efficient service to its customers, no matter how they choose to enjoy their meals.
