The ARD is restructured, and the “Mittagsmagazin” (“MiMa”) is also affected. From now on, the show will be produced by MDR, and its content will also be realigned. The fact that two moderators apparently have to go causes a stir.

Everything new at “Lunch Magazine” (“MiMa”) from ARD and ZDF: The previously one-hour program will be shown for two hours from 2024, and will also start at 12 p.m. This was announced by the public houses on Friday.

This is accompanied by a change in editorial responsibility: The Central German Broadcasting (MDR) produced on the ARD side because the crisis-ridden Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB) gave up this task at the end of the year due to pressure to save (WELT reported). MDR will broadcast from Leipzig in the future.

Officially, according to the dpa news agency, the broadcaster network said: The “Mittagsmagazin” will henceforth “focus on culture, climate and future issues and in particular on diverse regional realities of life”, and it should “offer opportunities for direct dialogue and a change of perspective”.

“Strengthening nationwide visibility of East German realities of life”

MDR director Karola Wille had also announced in a press release on Friday: “A ‘Midday Magazine’ produced by MDR is a strong social sign for ARD’s continued joint commitment in eastern Germany. We strengthen the nationwide visibility of East German realities of life. With the support of the entire ARD, we are showing the diversity of our country from Görlitz to Aachen, from the Zugspitze to Rügen.”

The planned restructuring already has consequences for two presenters: Nadia Kailouli and Aimen Abdulaziz-Said will not be taken on by MDR to Leipzig, as they both announced on their social media channels at the end of last week.

Both published an identical text: “As you know, the ARD-MiMA is moving to Leipzig in 2024. Unfortunately, I will no longer moderate the show. According to the MDR editor-in-chief, the future moderation should have an East German background. I have to accept that and wish my colleagues every success,” said Twitter on the profiles of the two persons concerned.

“It’s a shame,” says other Twitter users at Kailouli’s post. Others ponder a so-called “positive racism” and wonder about “bio-Ossis” that might now come into play. Nadia Kailouli – who describes herself as a “freelance journalist” in her biography, i.e. is not contractually bound to the ARD – grew up in North Rhine-Westphalia, Aimen Abdulaziz-Said in Hamburg. Neither of them have an East German background.

MDR does not comment on personal details

The news portal “T-Online” asked the MDR, and received the following reply: In the realignment from 2024, “of course, the question of moderation also plays an important role”. “Sufficient time will be taken” for the personnel realignment and “we will inform you accordingly when the time comes”.

The broadcaster is also quoted: “It is clear that the MDR already has excellent, popular and diverse presenters in its formats with very different personal characteristics – East German, West German, all of Germany, with and without a migration background, etc.” However, personal details of Kailouli and Abdulaziz-Said are not referred to.

The “Sueddeutsche Zeitung” speculated under the heading “Leipzig Qualification” also about whether the origin is decisive for a “MiMa” commitment, but does not come to a conclusive conclusion. The casting for the new “MiMa” positions is currently taking place, it is said there. And that the moderators, as is so common in the industry, are mostly freelancers and not permanently employed, so that personnel shifts are quite common.

On the official site Incidentally, the two outgoing moderators can still be found in the “Mittagsmagazin”, as can reporter Susann Reichenbach – the online encyclopedia “Wikipedia” notes that Borna (Saxony) was her place of birth and her place of residence: “Leipzig”.
