This Saturday, Colombia celebrates 214 years since the cry for independence, one of the most important dates in the country’s history. On the occasion of this celebration, it is essential to know the meaning of the national symbols that represent the identity and essence of Colombia.

National flag

The flag of Colombia is a symbol full of meaning and pride. It is composed of three horizontal stripes of different colors:

Yellow: It represents the abundance and richness of our soil, in addition to symbolizing sovereignty, harmony and justice.

Azul: It symbolizes the sea, the two oceans on which Colombia has coasts and which unite us with other peoples for the exchange of products.

Rojo: It represents blood, not the kind spilled out of hatred, but the kind that feeds the heart and gives it movement and life. It symbolizes love, power, strength and progress.

National Emblem

The coat of arms of the Republic of Colombia consists of three horizontal stripes, each with elements that represent fundamental aspects of the nation:

Andean Condor: It symbolises freedom and is depicted facing forward, with its wings outstretched and looking to the right. From its beak hangs a wreath of green laurels and a waving ribbon with the national motto “Liberty and Order”.

Upper Strip: On a blue background there is an open gold pomegranate, with a stem and leaves also made of gold, evoking New Granada, the historical name of Colombia in the 19th century. On either side there are two cornucopias: one with gold and silver coins and the other with tropical fruits, symbolizing the wealth and prodigality of the national soil.

Middle Strip: On a platinum background is a Phrygian cap, a symbol of freedom.

Lower Strip: On the sea, two ships with their sails unfurled appear on either side of the Isthmus of Panama, symbolizing the two oceans that bathe the country and alluding to Colombia’s trade with the world. The shield is flanked by two national flags.

National anthem

The National Anthem of Colombia was composed in 1887 with lyrics by Rafael Núñez and music by the Italian composer Oreste Síndici. It was created to commemorate the Independence of Cartagena on November 11. Law 33 of October 28, 1920, sanctioned by President Marco Fidel Suárez, granted it official status, consolidating it as a symbol of national identity and unity.
