Four cases of measles were reported in Burgenland on Friday. The health authorities announced that the sick people were isolated, the contact persons were identified and the vaccination status was checked, the country announced in a broadcast.
BURGENLAND. As in several other federal states, four measles infections were confirmed in Burgenland. According to the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES), a noticeable increase in measles cases has recently been registered in Austria.
Serious infectious disease
Since measles is a serious infectious disease with high complication rates, a vaccination consisting of two partial vaccinations is recommended, the broadcast said. The country also appealed to the population not to go to the doctor without registering if they suspected measles, but to call ahead to protect other patients. Both the vaccine and vaccination are free.
Measles can cause serious complications, particularly in children under five years of age (and adults over 20 years of age). These include middle ear infections, pneumonia and diarrhea, and more rarely, encephalitis, and there can be long-term consequences. In order to contain the spread of this infectious disease, contact persons can be officially restricted or even separated as high-risk contact persons by notification – depending on whether they have full vaccination protection or not.
