Anyone who grills more than just sausages knows that good meat at the right cooking level depends on the perfect core temperature. The most important utensil is a good meat thermometer.

Five years ago, a thermometer revolutionized the grilling and cooking scene: the Meater. It was the first wireless thermometer that could be connected to a smartphone via Bluetooth and controlled from a distance of ten meters without tangled cables thanks to an app. Over the years, the Meater+ (with a longer range) and the Meater Block (with four sensors) followed.

Today (November 6th) the next, completely revised generation comes onto the market: the Meater2Plus. BILD grill master Michael Quandt (54) was able to test the device in advance.

Installation

Simple as with its predecessors: pull the plastic strip out of the battery compartment and the sensor is then charged in 15 minutes. In the meantime, download and install the app from the App Store. The pairing works easily in 20 seconds on the first try. New compared to the Meater+: The battery should now last two years instead of just one year.

Everything new with the sensor

The temperature sensor was completely redeveloped. Instead of ceramic, the tip for measuring the ambient temperature is now made of solid metal. This enables use at higher temperatures.

There are now five precision-calibrated sensors in the tip of the probe itself, meaning the measurement accuracy in the grilled food is now 0.3 degrees.

The core temperature is measured at up to 105 degrees (previously 100 degrees), the ambient temperature can now be 500 degrees (!), with the original meater it was “only” 275 degrees. Since the sensor is 100 percent waterproof, you could theoretically even fry it.

The most important innovation for me: the diameter of the temperature sensor. Instead of around seven, it is now only five millimeters – that is 30 percent less. Nice effect: the hole in the food to be grilled is significantly smaller and less disruptive.

The test

Operation via the app is child’s play. First you choose what should go on the grill (e.g. beef, fish), then the corresponding cut (e.g. steak). The test involves a 400 gram ribeye steak from the Brandenburg heifer. Unfortunately it’s not very thick, so there’s a risk of overcooking the meat.

The steak is first seared at 350 degrees direct heat for 90 seconds on each side.

After grilling, the thermometer is inserted into the food to be grilled

The temperature sensor is then inserted into the meat, the desired core temperature is set and the Meater2Plus takes over.

The cooking process can be observed in a graphic.

Overcooking the food to be grilled is almost impossible. The app warns visually and acoustically when the food needs to be removed from the flame and left to rest.

The result is impressive: the ribeye steak is cooked exactly to the desired point: medium rare. All cooking processes can be saved in the Meater cloud and can then be accessed again.

Grill School

Brand new in the app is the master class for stove and grill. Various steak cuts, from fillet to ribeye, from chicken to beef, as well as lots of side dishes and methods of preparation are explained both in the video and step by step, and there is also a shopping list. This means that even beginners can have a perfect grilling or cooking experience.

Grillmeister conclusion

Handling without annoying cables or tangled cables is very practical. For example, a roast on the grill spit can be easily monitored. The temperature sensor is pleasantly thin compared to other wireless grill thermometers. The temperature range of up to 500 degrees makes the device usable in the grill, oven, cooking top and even in the deep fryer. The temperature accuracy The app is quick to install, easy to pair and intuitive to use

Over the last ten years, I have probably tried 15 different grill thermometers. Nothing has convinced me as much as the Meater2Plus! It is certainly the best product on the market at the moment.

The downer: the price. The Meater2Plus costs a cool 129 EUR! That’s why the device is certainly not a thermometer for occasional grillers or those who don’t cook much. But anyone who frequently prepares fish or meat will quickly appreciate the benefits.
