Medals by Raffarin, drawing by Faure, “optimism” by Le Pen… politicians’ wishes for 2024

They do not (yet?) have the Elysian decorum as a backdrop nor the honors of live broadcasting. Several French political leaders nevertheless sacrificed this Sunday, December 31, to the ritual of greetings to the French, most of them on video, ahead of those of Emmanuel Macron expected at 8 p.m.

Visibly more in a hurry than the others before this Olympic year, the mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo even gave herself a false start by broadcasting, by mistake, her speech on December 30, arousing, unsurprisingly, some mockery among Internet users. In front of a decor in the colors of the “Paris Games”, the councilor announced “a global meeting of brotherhood and peace in a world which lacks so much”.

Raffarin promises Édouard Philippe “gold in the 1,500m, the queen race”

Before her, Jean-Pierre Raffarin had already spun the Olympic metaphor into a greeting message in the form of a table of medals. The former Prime Minister thus promises Emmanuel Macron “gold in the 4x100m relay, a beautiful straight line before a good handover”, to Édouard Philippe, “gold in the 1,500m, the queen race” or current Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne, “gold in the long jump, the test of distance”.

Jean-Pierre Raffarin, on the other hand, distributes tackles to his opponents, rewarding the socialist Olivier Faure with “diving gold”, predicting the Insoumis Jean-Luc Mélenchon disqualification in judo for “lack of respect for opponent” and to Marine Le Pen a “new failure in the triple jump final”.

“Never have our ideas been so validated,” assures Marine Le Pen

The president of the National Rally said, on the contrary, “her heart full of optimism” in a very classic video (lamp, desk, fireplace) posted on X, welcoming the progress of the RN in the polls.

“In the public debate, our ideas have never been so validated,” assures Marine Le Pen, referring to the recent adoption of the immigration law. And to set a date for the European elections of 2024. “As we have put Emmanuel Macron in the minority in the Assembly, it is now up to us to make his political family a minority in the European Parliament.”

The president of Reconquête Éric Zemmour provided the minimum service with a photo showing him from behind and a short audio in which he wishes the French “a year of truth”.

Fights and dove

More original in form, PCF boss Fabien Roussel is filmed to the sound of “Jingle Bells” in a Christmas setting which he “swipes” on his smartphone to reveal a background, obviously red. The message is clear: “2023 is the year we could have done without: war, global warming, attacks, high costs of living and inflation, pension reform, immigration law… Frankly, nothing will have been spared.”

And the communist invites people to enjoy New Year’s Eve with family and friends to better prepare for the “battles” to come, expressing the wish for “the right to happiness and happy days for each and everyone”, his presidential campaign slogan.

In his greeting video, the boss of the socialists Olivier Faure uses his artistic talents to draw a dove, a symbol of peace, carrying the European flag in its beak. Refusing to sink into the “resignation” that the period could inspire, he delivers a message: “When hope meets will, we change the world”.

His Republican counterpart Éric Ciotti chose the port of Nice, his chosen location, to shoot his video. He also wants to turn the page on a “difficult” year and is committed to bringing to “a fighting right, courageous, offensive, constructive” wishing for France “order and freedom”.

The reflections of Hollande and Bayrou

The former head of state François Hollande also went there with his message where we see him in his wanderings throughout the year 2023. “I spoke to all my compatriots, to these French people worried about all these external upheavals and these internal renunciations. They are looking for direction, meaning,” he confides, in a barely veiled criticism of his successor.

In 2024, the former president undertakes to continue to “deliver (his) thoughts” to “contribute to opening a new era for our country and for Europe”. “A time of hope”.

The president of the MoDem François Bayrou also delivers reflections in his video greeting listing five major challenges to take on for the coming year: demography, reconquest of production, education, control of public spending (its marotte) and democracy.

At the start of the evening, the other party leaders had not yet sent their wishes to the French. As of Saturday, the Insoumis nevertheless sent a video taking stock of their action in 2023 in four minutes flat.

It ends with the words of Jean-Luc Mélenchon in his speech delivered at the Fête de l’Humanité last September where he repeats his now famous injunction. “Do better, that is to say do better than my generation who achieved nothing,” calls out the tribune. Bring down the citadel (…). Do better, tear down this system. »
