Media learned about the threat of banning Samsung Pay in Russia

Russia may prohibit the operation of the Samsung Pay payment system due to a patent dispute, Kommersant reported, citing the text of the decision of the Moscow Arbitration Court.

The Moscow Arbitration Court satisfied the claim of the Swiss company Squin SA against Samsung Electronics Rus Company and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. for the use of the invention to pay for the purchase using the customer’s phone without the consent of the copyright holder – “Squin SA”. The court actually banned the use of Samsung Pay in Russia and the import into the country of smartphones that support the payment system.

The defendant in the case can appeal the decision of the court within 30 days. According to the National Agency for Financial Research, as of March 2021, 17% of mobile payment service users use Samsung Pay.

The court, on the basis of expert opinions, concluded that Samsung Pay actually uses the technologies of the Squin SA patent. The court banned Samsung “the use of products that include Samsung Rau, namely, an offer to sell, another introduction into civil circulation in the territory of the Russian Federation.”

Samsung Electronics told the publication that it was studying the documents. No changes are currently planned in the company’s operational activities. Kommersant was unable to contact Squin SA or find any information about it.
