  For a long time we could not dare, but on a cold snowy morning on March 4, we made a decision – we had to leave. The life of children and their safety is the most important thing. The rest of our lives, everything, everything, we abandoned in an instant. At the exit from the Dnieper, we immediately got into a traffic jam – three lanes of refugees. Most cars have “Children” signs on them.

  For a five year old adventure, older ones understand more

  The first 12 hours of the journey – a solid traffic jam, we drove only 250 kilometers. It is not so much the road that is hard, but the children going crazy in the car. We told the younger five-year-olds that we were going on a long journey-adventure. The older ones – 8 and 12 years old – maintained this illusion, but I saw that they understand much more.

  It’s a strange feeling – as if we all go to the sea in the summer, at gas stations there are queues for gasoline and coffee. Only now all women and children are sad, fathers-drivers have anger and nascent aggression. And very, very cold.

  Gasoline in a can was carried by hand to the car

  In a car at a gas station, where there is gasoline, they are allowed to fill no more than 20 liters, for which you have to stand up to five hours. We are almost at zero near Uman – through acquaintances we found a local guy who said that he would help with gasoline and take us through the fields through the villages again to the highway, but much further. Take a chance? Terrible and scary, but we went after him. The guy saved us.

  This is not a quest. What if the car breaks down or the food runs out?

  With the eldest son, we applied gasoline to the car on foot with canisters. Let’s go further. And I’m only now beginning to realize that all this is not a quest. It’s minus outside and it’s snowing. What if the car breaks down? What if the food runs out? What if there’s no more gas guy? And what is ahead after the border with Poland?

  On the roads – collapse, many roadblocks

  The roads are a real mess. Lots of roadblocks. Thieves ignore the queue and fly in the opposite direction. Terrible head-on accidents. There are a lot of military vehicles on the roads. If at least one car in our queue now suffers, panic will begin. There are thousands of refugees on the road that I see. Grocery stores along the way are empty.

  Overnight at a school in an unknown village

  On the way we are offered accommodation and food! First we stop at a school in a village unknown to us, then somewhere near Vinnitsa in a rehabilitation center, with friends of our friends in a small town at the junction of Ternopil and Khmelnytsky regions and in line at the border with Poland. Nobody ever takes money from us. My kids eat everything now! March 10 – we are finally in Poland.
