Thiruvananthapuram: PG students of Govt. Medical Colleges in Thiruvananthapuram are continuing their agitation and the government is not backing down from its uncompromising stand. Kovid wards have been excluded by students from the strike. But the boycott of duty in the intensive care unit, emergency department and labor room continues. PG students made up the bulk of the emergency department in medical colleges.
There are about 2000 PG doctors in the state. Other doctors are unable to ensure immediate treatment as they are left in droves. It is learned that the government has verbally instructed the district and general hospital chiefs to refer only the critically ill patients to the medical college hospitals.
Meanwhile, Health Principal Secretary Rajan N. Khobragade directed the Director of Health Education to take stern action against the protesters. The letter states that those who do not attend will not be able to write the exam and will not receive a stipend. The students’ strike was without signing the attendance register. Those who do covid duty also do not sign the attendance register as part of the protest. Officials of the Kerala Medical Post Graduate Association alleged that the government was trying to intimidate them. Doctors and house surgeons from medical colleges have announced their support for the strike.
Doctors’ strike four days later
Thiruvananthapuram: Four days have passed since the KGMOA, a body of doctors under the Directorate of Health, staged a sit-in protest in front of the Secretariat against the cuts in salaries and benefits.
The protest was organized by the Alappuzha district committee yesterday. Former KGMOA State Secretary Dr. B. Mohandas inaugurated the function. Today the strike is being led by the Kottayam district committee. Mohandas said it was reprehensible that the government had cut the salaries and benefits of doctors who work without even looking at their own health, while setting higher salary scales for new posts in other sectors.
