Medicine watchdog positive about antibody against RS virus in babies

by time news

The European medicines watchdog EMA is positive about an antibody, discovered by researchers at Amsterdam UMC, that should protect newborn babies against the life-threatening RS virus.

As soon as the European Commission approves the drug called Nirsevimab, it can be used against the respiratory syncytial virus.

Every year, 150 to 200 babies end up in the ICU with the cold virus, says the Amsterdam UMC. Professor of intensive care for children Job van Woensel of the Amsterdam UMC says that the drug should prevent a lot of suffering and death worldwide. Hardly any children die here from the virus. (ANP)
