Will the mystery of the coral rings be solved soon? This is the objective of a mission led by Ifremer and the University of Corsica for three years. Thus, a new underwater expedition is carried out in the natural marine cape of Cap Corse.

Off Cap Corse, the scientists of an expedition have been wondering for three years about the origin of the coral rings 120 meters deep. They are a total of 1,137. They measure about 30 meters in diameter. These are remains of shells and calcareous algae still mysterious. “When you see them, there is immediately an almost supernatural dimension”, confides Laurent Ballesta, photographer and biologist. This geological curiosity was discovered by a university about ten years ago.

20,000 boats sail in Cap Corse

Today, the cap marin du Cap Corse finances explorations because the reefs are a unique ecosystem in the world. Purple or white gorgonians grow there. But near the coast, this environment is necessarily fragile. 20,000 boats sail in Cap Corse above a remarkable biodiversity. Fortunately, without a submarine, it is impossible to go and disturb these calcareous algae with their perfect geographical shapes and which are keeping their secret for the moment.
