In the middle of the night and at the end of a very intense match, the Russian Daniil Medvedev, 5th in the world, overcame the German Alexander Zverev (16th) 3-6, 7-5, 7- 6 (9/7) and qualified for the quarter-finals of the Masters 1000 of Monte-Carlo.
Medvedev, who says he hates clay, fought for more than three hours and saved two match points to give himself the right to face Dane Holger Rune (9th) on Friday for a place in the last four. He had already played the semis for his last participation in 2019.

Zverev served for the match at 5-4 in the second set, but the Russian fielded three games in a row to tie it at one set all. Then, Zverev earned the break to lead 5-4 and serve again for the game in the deciding set.
Again Medvedev came back but this time both players came to the tie break.
Zverev got the first two match points: he missed the first at 6/5 and then Medvedev saved the second at 7/6.
And in the process, the Russian offered himself a match point on his face-off and concluded with a big service winner.
