The Meyer Group, makers of the giants Icon of the Seas and Odyssey of the Seas, unveiled an innovative cruise ship concept called “Reverse” in March, offering a glimpse into the future of sustainable cruise ship design.

The concept, inspired by the streamlined shape of a rockhopper penguin, imagines what cruise ships will look like in the year 2100 and features drone landing pads, an enclosed glass facade and urban garden areas.

The ship was designed to be moved without the use of fossil fuels, using wave energy obtained through horizontal wings in the ship’s hull, in addition to solar and fuel cells and wind energy.

The cabin structure is detached from the outer hull, enabling efficient modular manufacturing methods. The interior also has central public areas.

According to Tim Krug, head of Meyer Group’s Concept Development Group, the ship is based on global megatrends and is a logical response.

He also explains that the ship has small areas of restaurants that serve more as social meeting points, as they imagine that most of the nutrients will be consumed in concentrated form as pills. “The ship is based on global megatrends and is one of the [mas não a única] logical answer to them”, he said.

To showcase the possibilities of sustainable materials, the “Reverse” model on display at Seatrade Cruise Global in Fort Lauderdale, Florida is built predominantly with environmentally friendly materials, with 90% of them being recycled or recyclable without waste.

The model also has a functional fuel cell powered by methanol to power the model’s lighting. Meyer Group trade show staff also use the system to charge smartphones and tablets.
