“Insularity should be taken into account and horizontal criteria should not be set”.

The intense concern and anxiety of the associations of parents and guardians and agencies regarding the small schools in Rhodes and the other islands of the Dodecanese, was conveyed by the Member of Parliament for Dodecanese, Mika Iatridis, in her meeting with the Deputy Minister of Education, Zetta Makri.

The Deputy General Secretary of the Parliamentary Group of the ND noted that the conversion of three-seater elementary schools to two-seaters in the island regions should not be done with horizontal criteria. On the contrary, insularity should be taken into account and the fact that the conversion of three-seater primary schools to two-seaters may, in some cases, force parents to relocate from the island where they live.

Furthermore, Mika Iatridis noted, the strengthening of three-seat schools in island and hard-to-reach areas will upgrade the education provided and, under certain conditions, create the conditions for increasing the number of students in these schools.

The member of parliament for Dodecanese added that in the context of the new recruitments announced by the Ministry of Education, it is an opportunity to ensure that insular and hard-to-reach areas are staffed with the necessary teaching staff.

The Deputy Minister of Education, Zetta Makri, listened with great attention and showed undivided interest in the specific issue, which is why it was decided to have another meeting at the Ministry next week.
