The Fifth President of the Republic of Indonesia, Megawati Soekarnoputri, addressed the younger generation to pay greater attention to art in Indonesia, amidst rapid modernization and technological advancements.
Megawati expressed this sentiment after attending an art exhibition by Dolorosa Sinaga at Building A of the Indonesian National Gallery in Central Jakarta on Thursday (8/8).
The daughter of the Proclaimer of Indonesian Independence, Soekarno or Bung Karno, shared her admiration for the diverse forms of art in Indonesia.
Megawati emphasized that her family played a significant role in fostering a love for arts and culture in the country.
“We come from a family of artists, and my parents have always appreciated artists and cultural figures, not just art,” she said, in her capacity as the general chairman of PDI Perjuangan.
She further argued that her appreciation for art and culture is a way of respecting the ideas and thoughts of artists.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Pancasila Ideology Development Agency (BPIP) then encouraged the younger generation not to neglect the rich diversity of arts and culture in Indonesia.
“Therefore, you should not shy away from culture and art. Modernization is important, but it would be better if you also learn about your own culture,” Megawati concluded.
