Philippine Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said during a press conference on Thursday, November 5, regarding an investigation into child sexual abuse material.
Authorities in the Philippines have named Thomas Markle Jr., the 60-year-old half-brother of Meghan Markle, as a person of interest
in an ongoing inquiry into child sexual abuse imagery allegedly involving his father, Thomas Markle Sr.
Remulla identifies signs of involvement for Markle Jr.
While officials emphasized that Markle Jr. is not currently being treated as a suspect, Secretary Remulla told a press conference in Manila that there are signs that point that the son is involved in the crime as well but only as a person of interest so far.
Remulla added that to accuse the father only is only half the police work.
The investigation follows reports that Markle Jr. alerted local police and the FBI to hundreds, if not thousands
of images he claims to have found in four storage boxes at his father’s home in the Philippines. According to Us magazine, the probe began after Markle Jr. discovered the material in Cebu.
Markle Jr. was recently interviewed via Microsoft Teams from his home in Cordova, Cebu, as part of an international, multi-agency meeting. He provided his statement to an FBI agent based in Florida who specializes in cases involving child sex abuse. When questioned by authorities regarding the presence of underage girls, the 60-year-old person of interest reportedly stated he was merely doing TikTok (videos).
The investigation is also pursuing claims from a witness who alleged that underage girls were being brought to a residence connected to the case. We have a witness [who says] underage girls were being brought to his house.
“We will investigate whether the son was involved in the crime,” Remulla said, per News5 Philippines.
Authorities recover thousands of sensitive files
Investigators have recovered approximately 7,500 pieces of sensitive material featuring underage males and females of Asian, Latin, and European descent. Remulla noted that the files were found on devices including cellphones and dismantled CPUs. He stated that the materials were presented to him, but he declined to look at them because he can’t unsee it.
The New York Post reported that some of the recovered items included a video of children engaging in sex acts.
The BBC reported last week that the electronic devices belonging to the 82-year-old Thomas Markle Sr. were seized as part of the inquiry. The New York Post stated that the FBI is assisting the Philippine government in identifying the registration of several phones that originated in the United States. Additionally, reports have surfaced regarding a raid of a storage unit in Mexico previously rented by Thomas Sr., where other illegal images were reportedly found.
Markle family members issue contrasting responses
Thomas Markle Sr., who has since moved to the US and is reportedly in a care home for dementia patients, has vehemently denied the allegations. He told the Daily Mail that his son’s claims were sick lies
, adding, I’m shocked, I’m hurt and I’m very upset that my son is making these accusations against me. I could never do what I’m being accused of. It’s the worst thing anyone could accuse me of.
He has suggested that he was set up.
At the start of the investigation, Remulla told The Guardian that the 82-year-old could be considered a possible sex offender of the grossest kind
as evidence was examined. Thomas Sr. has admitted to paying for sex in the Philippines but denies the possession of child abuse imagery.
Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, expressed that she was deeply distressed
by the claims. In a statement shared by Us magazine, she noted that she had been informed of disturbing allegations against her father in 2018. She stated that a letter regarding this matter had been sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection, and was subsequently shared with her.
Next steps in the investigation
Police work continues to establish the ownership of the devices containing the material. Remulla indicated that the investigation into whether the son was involved is ongoing, stating, We will know in the next few days.
