Rand eight months after a video with a possibly right-wing gesture became known, the Leipzig public prosecutor has brought charges against the Ballermann singer Melanie Müller. The 34-year-old is accused of having repeatedly shown the so-called Hitler salute to the audience as a singer on a stage in Leipzig in mid-September 2022, the prosecution in the Saxon city announced on Wednesday.

Müller, whose real name is Melanie Blümer, is accused of using signs of unconstitutional and terrorist organizations. According to the information, the singer denied the allegation during the preliminary investigation. The public prosecutor’s office did not provide any further information on the status of the investigation. The District Court of Leipzig will decide whether to allow the indictment. The charges were brought in early May.

Gesture has been part of her appearance for years, says Müller

The investigations were triggered by a video that became known in September, which is supposed to show Müller how she raises her right arm several times during the performance, which is reminiscent of the Hitler salute. She told the “Bild” newspaper last year that this gesture had been part of her stage performance for years.

The hand movement does not have a right-wing extremist background, Müller explained. In a statement published on Instagram, the 34-year-old also said in September that she “has nothing to do with right-wing extremists or nationalist ideas”. You condemn it in the strongest possible terms, says Müller.
