Melting snow reveals archaeological finds

by times news cr

In a recent press release, the local authorities are asking tourists and outdoor enthusiasts in the mountains of Møre and Romsdal counties to report any objects found in the melting snow.

“This summer reminded me of 2014. in the summer, which was extremely dry and hot. Along with the low amount of snow in the mountains, the size of the Høgfjelle snowdrifts has decreased significantly. As a result, the county council has received reports of very interesting finds that have appeared in old snowdrifts,” Møre and Romsdal County Municipality announce.

in 2014 between Eikesdalen and Romsdal, the remains of a wooden shovel from Roman times were found. In addition, a number of items related to hunting and trapping of wild reindeer were found, such as scare sticks, several antlers and bones with butchering marks, wooden rattles and braided ropes.

Snowdrifts and blocks of ice can preserve organic remains for a long time – because the cold slows down chemical and biological processes: freezing temperatures almost stop them.

Møre and Romsdal County Municipality are asking the public to capture any finds in photos and, if possible, capture GPS coordinates (or mark on a map) – so that archaeologists can locate the object(s).

If finds – such as an arrowhead – can be transported safely and without damage, please document the location, wrap the object and place it in a refrigerator, then notify local authorities. Objects such as bone or deer antlers should be placed in the freezer to ensure their preservation.
