A few years ago, American JD Vance touched millions with his personal story. The book was recently published in German. Now it is coming out again. This also has to do with the US election campaign.

Munich.

Since his appointment as Donald Trump’s right-hand man, there has been great interest in the US politician JD Vance around the world. His bestseller “Hillbilly Elegy” is still being rediscovered – eight years after its publication. The autobiography of the US Vice-Presidential candidate, which also talks a lot about the socially disadvantaged white people in America, has recently been sold in Germany.

The new German version is now working. It will be published by Yes Publishing on August 15th. The Wall Street Journal wrote about the work: “‘Hillbilly Elegy’ is an excellent memoir, but also a work of tradition about the work of white Americans … . (Vance) offers a convincing statement if someone, having grown up the way he did, it’s very difficult to create a fascinating book.”

A story of denu

In his book, which was made into a film by Ron Howard in 2020, JD Vance tells a story of failed progress and the abandonment of an entire population.

His grandparents, real mountaineers, that is, members of the white class in rural areas, tried hard to escape poverty and establish themselves in society. But in the end everything is in vain. Abuse, alcoholism and poverty are the main characteristics of hillbilly life.

Vance witnessed the decline of a population

James David Vance, born in 1984, spent his childhood and youth in the industrial town of Middletown in the US state of Ohio and in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky. In his youth he experienced economic decline and population decline there. He grew up in a broken family, joined the Marine Corps after high school and was stationed in Iraq. He later studied law at Yale University and became a director of an investment firm in Silicon Valley.

Originally a bitter opponent of Trump, Vance was soon brought into his campaign team by the Republican front-runner and chosen as the future vice president. (dpa)
