Ahmed Javad is one of the masters of words, distinguished by a unique style in the history of Azerbaijani literary and artistic thought. Filled with freedom-loving motives, the work of the master, who throughout his life remained faithful to the ideals of independence of his native people, is permeated with national ideology. Instilling a love for independent statehood, the works of the poet, who passionately glorify the state attributes of Azerbaijan, are a delightful poetic expression of deep patriotism.
As Day.Az reports with reference to AZERTAC, today is the day of remembrance of the prominent representative of Azerbaijani literature, the great poet, famous educator and public figure Ahmed Javad.
In 2022, according to the relevant Order of President Ilham Aliyev, the 130th anniversary of the birth of the prominent representative of Azerbaijani literature, the great poet, famous educator and public figure Ahmed Javad was celebrated in our country with a series of events.
Ahmed Javad (full name – Javad Muhammedali oglu Akhundzade) was born in 1892 in the village of Seyfali, Shamkhor district, Ganja province, into a peasant family.
Having received his primary education in a local mall, he continued his studies at the school of the Ganja Charitable Society and the Ganja Theological Seminary, and deeply studied Arabic and Persian languages, and oriental literature.
In Istanbul, Ahmed Javad joined the “Caucasian Volunteer Detachment” (1912), in which he took an active part in battles against foreign invaders. The march to the words of his famous poem “Chyrpynyrdy Gara Deniz…” (“The Black Sea was raging…”), sounded in the Grand Majlis of Turkey (1914), gained unprecedented popularity.
For some time he was deputy chairman of a charitable society created by Dr. Khosrovbek Sultanbekov, and took an active part in the activities of this society on the front line in the North Caucasus, in Kars, Ardahan, Erzurum, Istanbul, Georgia and Dagestan.
At the same time, he was actively involved in journalistic activities, his articles and front-line notes were regularly published in the Tiflis and Baku press (1914-1915).
In 1916-1918, he traveled to Turkey as part of the Azerbaijani delegation.
The first collections of poems by Ahmed Javad “Goshma” (1916) and “Dalga” (1919), as well as a textbook on the morphology and syntax of the Turkish language (“Türk dilinin serf ve nahvi”, 1919) were published in Baku.
Ahmed Javad is the author of the National Anthem of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. Today this anthem is the State Anthem of the independent Republic of Azerbaijan.
He took an active part in the creation of the Azerbaijan State University (now Baku State University).
In subsequent years, he worked as a teacher of Russian and Turkic Azerbaijani languages and a school director in the village of Khulug, Gusar region (1920), and head of the department of public education in the Guba region (1920-1922).
In 1922-1927 he studied at the Faculty of History and Philology of the Azerbaijan Higher Pedagogical Institute, and at the same time was a teacher at the technical school named after. N. Narimanova.
In 1924-1926 he worked as the executive secretary of the Society of Soviet Writers of Azerbaijan. At this time he was arrested for the poem “Goygol”.
In 1927, he was sent to work at the Transcaucasian Institute of Cotton Growing as a teacher, but even here he was not left alone; persecution began for poems published in the collection “Istiglal”, published in Turkey.
In subsequent years (1930-1933), Ahmed Javad worked at the Ganja Agricultural Institute as a teacher, and then as an associate professor in the department of Russian and Azerbaijani languages, after which he headed this department.
In 1933 he was awarded the title of professor. After this, the poet worked as the head of the literary department of the Ganja Drama Theater.
In 1934, Ahmed Javad returned to Baku. At first he worked as an editor in the translation department at the Azerneshr publishing house, and in 1935-1936. – Head of the documentary films department at the Azerbaijanfilm film studio.
In March 1937, the poet was awarded first prize in a competition announced for the translation of Shota Rustaveli’s poem “The Knight in the Tiger’s Skin” into Azerbaijani.
Two months later he was arrested, and on October 12, 1937, he was shot. Only 18 years later he was acquitted due to the lack of corpus delicti in the “case.”
After this, his books “Scheirler” (1958), “Sen aglama, men aglaram” (1991), as well as translations of “Gargantua and Pantagruel” by Francois Rabelais (1961), the tragedies “Othello” and “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare (1962), Shota Rustaveli’s poem “The Knight in the Tiger’s Skin” (1978).
By the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, Ahmed Javad was included in the list of authors whose works are declared state property of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
