The film collected more than 22 crores from the Tamil Nadu box office on the day of its release. The first day gross worldwide was around Rs 80 crore.
The film is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s book Ponniyin Selvan. It is a fictional account of the rise of Arulmozhi Varman or Raja Raja Chola as the king of one of the largest empires in India. The makers say that the second part of the film will be released in 2023.
