In more intimate dating, it’s very exciting to see who will say the magic three words “I love you” first. Contrary to expectations, a study confirmed: It’s men.

If you start a survey among your own circle of friends, most people will probably say that women are faster than Men say the words “I love you.” This corresponds to the cliché that women think more emotionally – but it is wrong.

In 2011, a team of behavioral scientists led by Joshua Ackerman at MIT examined the results of six studies that examined love confessions. One result of the study analysis was that the majority of people assume that women take this important verbal step of saying “I love you”. But the cliché does not correspond to reality. In a further analysis that compared past relationships with current ones, it was analyzed that men are the driving force when it comes to expressing love.

The researchers were able to show, as the online magazine “Psychology Today” reports, that men generally thought about verbalizing their feelings six weeks earlier than women. But why?

“I love you” – men often only have one thing on their minds

The researchers looked into the reason for the faster love chatter and came to an almost insidious conclusion about the motives. “Men often take the initiative in promoting romantic relationships so that they don’t miss out on a potentially beneficial mating opportunity,” the research team said. In short, according to the study, evolution drives men to try to get a woman into bed faster with an expression of love.

In another study by psychologist Christopher Watkins from Abertay University and an international team of researchers, this theory was confirmed. They examined love confessions in seven different countries: Australia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, France, Poland and the United Kingdom. 970 people with an average age of 34 were asked to fill out a questionnaire about love confessions. In all seven countries, men and women said men were more likely to say “I love you.”

In summary, available studies suggest that men worldwide are probably more likely to say “I love you” first.
