So far, only women have led Bundesliga soccer games. If the managers of the top clubs and national coach Horst Hrubesch have their way, that should change.

The fact that no men are used as referees in the women’s Bundesliga is met with incomprehension by FC Bayern Munich, among others. “If we are currently unable to bring sufficient quality and quantity of female referees onto the pitch – why are we not in a position to open the gates to male referees in the women’s Bundesliga?” said Bianca Rech, women’s football -Head of the German champions, in an interview with “Kicker”. “We would like the DFB to prioritize this issue more.”
Wolfsburg’s sports director Ralf Kellermann and national coach Horst Hrubesch agreed in the three-way interview. “We are the only top nation in Europe that doesn’t allow the referee teams to be filled with men. It’s not about a man refereeing the top game in the women’s Bundesliga,” said Kellermann. Hrubesch demanded: “Quality has to decide. It doesn’t matter whether I appoint a man or a woman. It’s the same as with coaching or manager positions.”
On the other hand, Hrubesch sees no need to introduce video evidence – which has long been common practice in the men’s Bundesliga – in the women’s Bundesliga. “I think: currently no,” the 72-year-old answered a corresponding question. Kellermann said that one cannot ignore it: “At the moment it is rather unrealistic because the infrastructural requirements are not met in all stadiums and, on the other hand, there is a lack of trained staff.” (dpa)
