(ANSA) – FLORENCE, 01 AUG – A new case of meningococcal meningitis was reported in Tuscany in less than a week: it was reported in a 27-year-old woman who lives in Prato and is currently hospitalized in a hospital of the ASL Toscana Centro.
Typing is underway to identify the strain involved. On July 26, a case of meningococcal B meningitis was reported in a 28-year-old man who lives and works in the municipality of Florence, who was also hospitalized in a hospital of the ASL Toscana Centro “in critical conditions” the Health Authority explained when giving the news.
Regarding the 27-year-old, the ASL explains, “health workers immediately recognized the clinical picture and promptly reported the case to the functional unit of public hygiene and nutrition of Prato, which immediately took action by implementing all the necessary preventive measures, proposing pharmacological prophylaxis to close contacts who emerged from the epidemiological investigation in accordance with the indications of the circular of the Ministry of Health on the ‘prevention and control of invasive bacterial diseases preventable by vaccination’ of May 9, 2017”. During the investigation, it emerged, among other things, that the young woman had traveled outside of Tuscany in recent days, “therefore the local ASL was informed for the relevant measures”. Meningococcal meningitis, the ASL recalls, “mainly affects small children, adolescents and young adults and can cause very serious clinical pictures”. (ANSA).
