UNCG Men’s Golf Finishes Fourth at Palmas del Mar Collegiate
A strong performance in Puerto Rico saw the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s golf team secure a fourth-place finish at the Palmas del Mar Collegiate, concluding play on Tuesday with an 11-under-par total of 853 at Palmas Del Mar Flamboyan in Humacao.
Spartans Showcase Consistency in Puerto Rico
The UNCG Spartans demonstrated consistent play throughout the three-day tournament, carding rounds of 290, 282, and 281. This steady performance ultimately placed them fourth overall, showcasing their resilience against a competitive field. The team also excelled in key statistical categories, finishing second in the tournament with an impressive 58 birdies and boasting a 4.58 average on par five holes.
Wake Forest Claims Tournament Victory
Wake Forest emerged victorious, dominating the leaderboard with a 26-under-par score of 838, achieved through rounds of 282, 281, and 275. TCU secured second place with a 20-under-par 844, while Southern Illinois rounded out the top three at 15-under-par 849. Further down the leaderboard, Eastern Kentucky, Delaware, and Southern Conference (SoCon) rival Wofford shared 12th place with a 14-over-par 878.
Hernandez Leads Individual Charge for UNCG
Kelvin Hernandez spearheaded the Spartans’ individual efforts, finishing in a tie for seventh place with a six-under-par 210, compiled from rounds of 72, 69, and 69. The junior’s final-round 69 marked a new season-best score for him. Hernandez also finished tied for fifth in the field with one eagle and an impressive 14 birdies.
Close behind was Dax Isbell, who tied for 16th place after consistently shooting one-under-par (71) across all three rounds, totaling three-under-par 213. B.J. Boyce demonstrated significant improvement, moving up 13 spots on Tuesday with a three-under-par 69, ultimately finishing in a tie for 23rd place with a one-under-par 215.
Career-Best Rounds Highlight Spartan Performance
Liam Percy also had a standout performance, carding a career-best round of three-under-par 69 on Tuesday, contributing to his tie for 51st place alongside teammate Jake Lewis at five-over-par 221. Other Spartan finishers included Will Guidry (tied for 59th at seven-over-par 223), Keenan Royalty (tied for 65th at nine-over-par 225), and Cole Isbell (tied for 78th at 14-over-par 230). Notably, Percy and Hernandez shared the second-best average on par five holes in the field, at 4.33.
Looking Ahead: Dorado Beach Collegiate on the Horizon
The UNCG men’s golf team will next compete at the Dorado Beach Collegiate from February 22-24 in Dorado, Puerto Rico, hosted at TPC Dorado Beach. This upcoming tournament provides another opportunity for the Spartans to showcase their skills and build upon their recent performance.
