Menstrual items available free of charge in Scotland from Monday

KAlmost two years after a political decision that is unique in the world, menstrual items are available free of charge in Scotland from Monday. Free access is “fundamental to equality and dignity,” said Scottish Social Justice Minister Shona Robison in a statement on Sunday. It announces that from Monday, city governments and educational institutions will be required to make menstrual items available to anyone who needs them.

In November 2020, the Scottish regional parliament unanimously voted in favor of free access to the products in public buildings. “We are proud to be the first national government to take such a step,” said Secretary Robinson.

Hygiene items were already free for pupils and students in Scotland. Passed in 2020, legislation committed the Scottish Government to ensuring everyone had access to these products.
