Psychiatric specialists gather to discuss mental health issues at scientific symposium

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Psychiatric specialists from around the world came together at a scientific symposium organized by the Eradah and Mental Health Complex in Riyadh to discuss various topics related to mental health. The symposium, which coincided with World Mental Health Day 2023 AD, aimed to raise awareness and provide education about mental health, emphasizing that it is a universal human right.

The discussions covered a wide range of areas within the field of psychiatry, including recent developments in the field, the link between mental illnesses and violence and crime, the effects of alcohol addiction on mental and physical health, and the difference between psychosis resulting from drug abuse and schizophrenia. Other topics of discussion included psychiatric medications and their interactions, as well as skills for dealing with mentally ill patients.

Alongside the symposium, an exhibition was held, featuring the participation of 13 agencies that provide mental health services. These agencies also collaborated with governmental and private organizations to implement awareness programs targeting employees, with the aim of spreading awareness and education about mental health and exchanging experiences.

Dr. Muhammad bin Mushabab Al-Ahmari, the Acting Executive Director of the Eradah and Mental Health Complex, highlighted the services provided by the complex during the past nine months of this year. A total of 161,806 services were provided, ranging from therapeutic, rehabilitative, and preventive measures.

In terms of specific services, the Ambulance and Emergency Department provided 31,138 services, while 65,730 services were provided in the outpatient clinics. Notably, the Communicative Medicine Department offered 6,244 virtual clinics, and hypnotic services were administered in both internal departments and at home, totaling 4,488 services. Home mental health care patients received 5,191 services, and 16,406 social services were provided to beneficiaries and their families. Furthermore, 6,009 psychological services were offered to those in need.

The comprehensive range of services also included aftercare services for beneficiaries, which amounted to 1,313, and 13,621 rehabilitation services for individuals undergoing medical rehabilitation and activities. Additionally, the complex provided family guidance and counseling services, offering 5,230 consultations. Education services and responses to inquiries through social networking sites, specifically through the (X) application, accounted for 3,452 services. The complex also issued 3,174 medical reports and facilitated 14,368 services for the elderly and people with special needs.

Dr. Muhammad Al-Ahmari emphasized the complex’s commitment to continuous improvement programs that enable individuals from all walks of life to access the mental health services they require. This includes medical and nursing care, psychological and social support, and rehabilitative services. The complex believes that such support is crucial in improving overall mental health, minimizing the consequences of mental illnesses, and assisting patients in reintegrating into society in a better condition.

The symposium and the activities organized in conjunction with World Mental Health Day demonstrate a commitment to tackling mental health challenges through collaboration, awareness, and education.
