BOLZANO. The regional council of Trentino Alto Adige has taken a further step towards postponing the elections in five municipalities to autumn due to the Covid emergency.

The executive approved the bill “Urgent provisions for the postponement of the date of the elections in spring 2021 for the election of the mayor and municipal councils”.

The administrations concerned are those of Merano, Nalles, Glorenza, Bondone, Brentonico and Terragnolo. Originally, the elections were supposed to take place between May 1st and June 15th.

The new mayors and members of the city councils will now have to be elected between 1st September and 15th November 2021. The validity of the electoral acts already completed, such as the declarations about the presentation of the lists of candidates to the municipal council or the declarations of acceptance of the candidacy and the relative certifications, remain in force for the new date of the electoral round. In addition, the bill provides that the signatures required for a candidacy are reduced to a third and that the remuneration for those who are busy in the polling stations is increased by 30 percent. The bill was unanimously approved by the regional council and will be examined in the next session of the regional council.
