The supermarket company Mercadona will place photovoltaic panels in shops of Blanes and l’Escala. The company says that the aim is to strengthen its “commitment to photovoltaic energy”. Mercadona plans to invest this 2023 approximately 60 million euros in the installation of solar panels on the roofs of their establishments.

They report that with the plates a store saves approximately 20% of its annual energy consumption compared to a store without this energy installed. The bet to install solar panels in the company started at the end of 2020 in some of the stores. In 2022, it invested 14 million euros in the installation of new solar panels.

Currently, the supermarket chain feeds on this source of energy a 114 stores, 9 logistic blocks, 3 Ruscs (which is how Mercadona calls the exclusive warehouses for online sales) and the offices that the company has just opened in Albalat dels Sorells (Valencia).

The forecast is to have by the end of 2023 a total of approximately 350 stores, and expand the number of logistics blocks and Ruscs with solar panels on the roofs. With all this installed power, Mercadona expects to save the energy equivalent to the cumulative annual consumption of 125 stores. The company’s goal for the year 2027 is to have self-consumption in more than 850 stores and in all logistics blocks and Ruscs.
