Mercedes-Benz Korea CEO Matthias Vitl appeared as a witness at the National Assembly’s Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee audit on the afternoon of the 7th and apologized for the Cheongna fire incident in Incheon. CEO Vittle said, “We are very sorry,” and added, “The fire investigation is ongoing, and the company will take appropriate responsibility once the results of the investigation come out and the situation becomes clear.”

CEO Vittle apologized several times on this day, but emphasized that subsidies or vouchers for affected residents or customers who suffered damage were a form of support, not ‘compensation.’ In response to Democratic Party lawmaker Lee So-young’s question, “Are you willing to take additional responsibility and compensation to the victims of the Cheongna Apartment complex beyond the existing compensation of 4.5 billion won?” Representative Vittle responded, “This is not compensation, but humanitarian support,” and added, “As a result of the investigation.” “As soon as this comes out and the situation becomes clear, I will take appropriate responsibility,” he said. He continued, “We will do our best to support everyone (including customers), including residents who have suffered damage.”

Even though the model (EQE) where the fire accident occurred was equipped with China’s Parasys battery, which ranks 10th in the world in terms of sales, it was advertised as using China’s CATL battery, the world’s largest battery manufacturer, and was reprimanded for ‘deceiving consumers.’ This is because in an interview in 2022, Christoph Stazynski, Vice President of Mercedes-Benz Electric Vehicle Development, said, “The EQE model will be equipped with battery cells supplied by CATL.”

In response to a question about this from Democratic Party lawmaker Son Myung-soo, CEO Vittle said, “I saw the interview with Staczynski. However, the answer was not to the effect that only CATL was used in the EQE model.” He said, “(Benz engineers) select battery cell suppliers with top priority on technology, quality and safety,” and added, “We do not discriminate based on market when it comes to stability and quality.”
