Mercedes Grapples with Power Unit Complexity After Russell’s Belgian Grand Prix Retirement

George Russell retired from the Belgian Grand Prix on the opening lap following a power unit energy deficit that left his Mercedes vulnerable. The incident resulted in a collision with Lewis Hamilton at Les Combes. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff later attributed 50 per cent of the retirement to the engine’s power output issues, noting that while the collision was a racing incident, the lack of energy was the primary problem.

Energy Deficits and the Opening Lap Collision

The race at Spa-Francorchamps ended abruptly for Russell after he experienced a severe lack of battery power immediately following the start. Russell reported that he reached the top of Eau Rouge with zero percent battery and was subsequently overtaken by three drivers on the long run down the Kemmel straight. Describing the sensation to Viaplay, Russell remarked, I came out of turn one and I had no power. I got to the top of Eau Rouge with zero percent battery and I was going slower than a Formula 2 car and I got overtaken by three drivers. It left me totally vulnerable.

Toto Wolff confirmed that the issue was not isolated to Russell’s car, stating, All Mercedes engines had a lack of energy out of Turn One so that wasn't only George. It affected him more than Kimi but also Kimi had that issue to a certain degree. While Kimi Antonelli, who won the race, acknowledged he had experienced similar issues earlier in the season—such as in Australia—the performance shortfall contributed to Antonelli being passed by Max Verstappen on the approach to Eau Rouge. Mercedes stated they did not understand why either the qualifying deficit or the race-day energy loss had occurred.

Technical Complexity and Power Unit Sensitivity

The fundamental challenge lies in the complexity of the latest F1 hybrid engines. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella explained that these units do not operate in an open-loop way where a pre-determined simulation dictates energy deployment. Instead, the system relies on live, forward-calculating operations.

There's a large component of the controller that operates the power unit that happens with live calculations and the power unit forward-thinks, forward-calculates what it has to do. There's a lot that happens as the car goes, Stella said. He further noted that these fluctuations impact more than just straight-line speed; they alter braking points. Because if you have an additional amount of harvest before braking, then you are approaching the braking 10km/h slower and your braking point changes.

Russell’s Season and Team Outlook

For Russell, the retirement in Belgium marks the third time this year he has failed to score in a Grand Prix. The Briton’s season has been marked by a series of setbacks, including a battery problem while leading in Canada and an unfair penalty in Monaco. In the World Championship standings, Russell currently sits 50 points behind his team-mate Antonelli and five points behind Hamilton.

As the team looks ahead, Antonelli expressed confidence that the issues would be addressed, stating, I’m sure it will be fixed for Budapest.
