Mercedes-Benz will cut production of the S-Class and the electric EQS due to weak demand for the German company’s two most luxurious sedans.

The limousines are manufactured in a factory in Sindelfingen, which usually operates in two shifts. The schedule will be disrupted, since the assembly of the cars from October will be done by only one shift.

“We are constantly optimizing our production network and using its high flexibility to respond to fluctuations and changing framework conditions related to geopolitical, micro- and macroeconomic developments and to remain competitive. Accordingly, we plan to adjust car production in some parts of Sindelfingen plant,” Mercedes said in a statement.

S-Class sales fell 22 percent in the first half of the year, with just 28,100 units delivered in the period. It is not known whether the production cuts will affect jobs. The factory in Sindelfingen is flexible and it is possible to produce another model there.
