The former Chancellor’s great love for Richard Wagner is widely known. Even as a private person, Angela Merkel does not want to miss the Bayreuth Festival.

Bayreuth.

As Chancellor, Angela Merkel (67) was a regular guest at the Richard Wagner Festival – and now she is expected back in Bayreuth as a former head of government. “The city has received a commitment from the former chancellor,” a city spokesman confirmed on Wednesday. The “Bild” newspaper had previously reported on it.

The world-famous festival opens on July 25 with the premiere of the opera “Tristan and Isolde”. Merkel and her husband Joachim Sauer are considered great fans of Wagner’s music. During her years as head of government, she usually not only attended the opening in Bayreuth, but also regularly attended other performances days later.

The city has not yet announced which other prominent guests from politics, business and culture will be walking the red carpet in the Upper Franconian city on July 25th. (dpa)
