Merkel to Putin: Germany has a problem with Russia

Dhe most heads of state and government in the western world probably did not think it appropriate to travel to Moscow last week on a farewell visit, like Angela Merkel, to meet with a figure as hostile as Vladimir Putin. But Germany’s political psychology and economic interests generate a unique public response when it comes to venturing out onto the floor with a dictator.

John Lough’s book closes with an eleven-point strategy, which the author hopes German politicians will adopt and “put aside their reflex behavior towards Russia and talk openly with one another.” The individual points sound familiar.
