Historical find

Written by Rainer Ackermann

On Thursday, a Messerschmitt Me-109 was recovered from Lake Balaton, which had crashed into the lake during World War II.

The rescue maneuver took place near Balatonakarattya at the northeastern end of Lake Balaton. The machine obviously has military historical value because, according to current knowledge, it is the only Messerschmitt discovered that was once assembled in Hungary and also had a Hungarian engine. Almost 3,000 of the single-seat fighter aircraft were built outside Germany after 1935.

The 21-year-old pilot Sándor Beregszászi died a hero’s death in the air battle with the Americans on July 2, 1944, explained military researcher Károly Magó. Expeditions to lift parts of the aircraft wreckage have been taking place since 2020. The wreck is approximately five meters deep in the lake and many parts are heavily rusted. The best preserved parts are those that were buried in the mud.
