Messi could not play in this year’s Leagues Cup due to an injury sustained in the Copa America final. Playing without the team’s biggest star, Inter Miami could not go far. Even from the lead, the last time champions were knocked out after three goals in just 12 minutes.
Miami started the match brilliantly. Miami took the lead in the 10th minute through Paraguayan midfielder Matias Rojas. Then another Paraguayan Diego Gomez scored a goal in the 62nd minute of the second half.
What happened next would be an understatement to call it a great comeback. Columbus equalized by scoring 2 goals within 3 minutes of falling behind. United States striker Christian Ramirez scored in the 67th minute and Diego Rossi scored in the 69th minute. Another goal by Uruguayan forward Rossi gave Columbus the win 11 minutes later.
Columbus will play against New York City in the quarterfinals next Saturday. New York City beat Mexico’s Tigers UANL 2-1 in another round of 16 match today.
