Messi and Ramos Set for All-Star Clash in Austin as MLS and Liga MX Prepare to Battle
The 2025 MLS All-Star Game, set to take place this week in Austin, Texas, will feature a highly anticipated reunion between Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos, rekindling a storied rivalry and partnership. The match pits the best players from Major League Soccer against a team comprised of stars from Mexico’s Liga MX, promising a compelling spectacle for fans of both leagues.
A Rivalry Renewed
For years, Messi and Ramos were fierce competitors, representing the pinnacle of Spanish football with Barcelona and Real Madrid, respectively. Their clashes were often defining moments in El Clásico, marked by intense battles and undeniable skill. However, the two iconic players later found themselves as teammates for two seasons at Paris Saint-Germain, from 2021 to 2023, adding a new layer to their complex relationship.
Now, they will once again be on opposing sides. Messi, currently shining for Inter Miami, will represent the MLS All-Stars, while Ramos, playing for Monterrey, will feature for the Liga MX squad.
All-Star Rosters and Rising Stars
The MLS roster boasts a wealth of talent beyond Messi, including Mexican standout Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano (San Diego), Uruguayan forward Diego Rossi (Columbus Crew), Brazilian midfielder Evander (FC Cincinnati), and Spanish defender Jordi Alba (Inter Miami). Messi currently leads the MLS scoring charts with 18 goals in 18 games, alongside Sam Surridge of Nashville. He’s been in exceptional form, netting 12 goals in his last seven league appearances, including six braces.
The Liga MX team will also showcase prominent players, such as Colombian James Rodríguez (León), Mexican forward Alexis Vega (Toluca), and Spanish midfielder Sergio Canales (Monterrey), alongside Ramos.
