Meta Blocks Iran’s Leader Khamenei’s Social Media Accounts Due to Policy Violations

by time news

The company Meta announced that it is blocking all the accounts of Iran’s leader Ali Khamenei. All the accounts of the supreme leader of Iran on social networks, including the Facebook, Instagram and Threads accounts, both in Persian and English – will be blocked immediately starting today (Thursday), an official spokesperson of the Meta company announced.

“We are removing these accounts due to the fact that they have repeatedly violated our policies against dangerous organizations and individuals,” a Meta spokesperson said in a media statement. According to the same policy, Meta removes content and users that distribute violent content or that aim for violence.

Khamenei, a very popular figure on Instagram, has a Persian account followed by 5.1 million people. In addition, his account in English on the social network was also followed by more than 200 thousand people.

In recent years, more and more Iranian dissidents living in the diaspora have called on Meta to block Khamenei’s accounts. Since October 7, the Iranian leader has used social media to express his open support for Hamas and support the Houthi organization in Yemen for launching missiles at ships in the Red Sea.

Even at this time, after Meta’s action, Khamenei still has an account on the X network (formerly Twitter), where he is followed by about a million people.
