Brussels Meta has suffered a setback in the dispute over the release of information in the context of EU investigations. The Court of Justice of the European Union on Wednesday rejected an objection by the Facebook parent to the data requests from the competition authorities.

The US group could not demonstrate that the documents went beyond what was necessary. The same applies to the question of why personal information cannot be adequately protected in a virtual data room.

According to its own statements, Meta has already handed over more than a million documents to the EU antitrust authorities since 2019. The company had previously described the authority as a “super fish trawler” that sucks up all sorts of data in its investigations.

It announced that it would review its options following the latest decisions. Meta can appeal to the European Court of Justice (ECJ).
