Meta Hires MongoDB CEO CJ Desai as MongoDB Shares Plummet Up to 17 Percent

MongoDB CEO Chirantan “CJ” Desai resigned on September 28, 2026, to join Meta Platforms as chief enterprise platform officer. The move triggered a sharp sell-off in MongoDB shares, which fell between 14 percent and 17 percent, while Meta positioned Desai to lead its newly launched enterprise AI business.

The exit of a chief executive is rarely a quiet affair, but the market reaction to Chirantan “CJ” Desai’s immediate departure from MongoDB was particularly visceral. Depending on the reporting source, shares plummeted between 14 percent and 17 percent on Monday as investors reacted to the poaching of a sitting CEO by one of the world’s largest technology firms.

Meta’s Enterprise AI Ambitions and the Muse Stack

Desai isn’t just joining Meta; he is being installed as the architect of a new frontier.

This new unit is designed to pivot Meta’s sophisticated internal tools toward the corporate sector. According to a Meta release cited by CNBC, the initial focus involves deploying a full technology stack to developers and businesses, featuring the Muse API, Muse Code, the Meta Business Agent, and the Muse agent.

Mark Zuckerberg confirmed the hire in a post on X, writing, We believe superintelligence will create significant new opportunities for all people and businesses.

The hire coincides with a massive escalation in Meta’s infrastructure spending. The company raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to $130 billion, an increase from $125 billion driven almost entirely by AI infrastructure.

Dev Ittycheria’s Return to MongoDB

To stabilize the ship, MongoDB’s board has turned to a familiar face. Dev Ittycheria, who led the company for 11 years before stepping down in November 2025, has been reinstalled as interim president and CEO, effective immediately.

Itycheria’s original tenure was defined by aggressive scaling. Under his previous leadership from 2014 to 2025, MongoDB evolved from an early-stage disruptor into a global leader, with annual revenue growing from approximately $35 million to more than $2.3 billion.

I'm honored to step back into the President and CEO role at MongoDB, said Ittycheria. I was privileged to lead the company for more than a decade and help build MongoDB into the global business it is today.

Tom Killalea, Chairman of the Board of Directors, stated, MongoDB's business is strong, and there is no better person to take on the role of President and CEO in the interim than Dev Ittycheria. Killalea noted that Ittycheria knows this company deeply, has remained an involved and active executive board member over the past year, and will step in immediately to ensure a seamless transition.

While Ittycheria manages the transition, the board has already retained an executive search firm to find a permanent successor.

Desai’s Track Record in Enterprise Software

Zuckerberg’s decision to hire Desai stems from a specific pedigree in full-stack software and infrastructure. Before his brief tenure as MongoDB CEO, which lasted less than a year after taking the role in November 2025, Desai led product and engineering at Cloudflare and spent nearly eight years at ServiceNow, where he served as president and COO.

In a post on X, Zuckerberg highlighted that CJ is an experienced enterprise leader with a track record of building full-stack software and delivering results in AI, infrastructure, business applications, and security.

Financial Guidance and Investor Day Stakes

Despite the leadership vacuum, MongoDB is attempting to project a sense of continuity. The company has reaffirmed its guidance for Q3 and the full fiscal year 2027, which was originally provided on September 1, 2026.

The timing of the resignation puts immediate pressure on the interim leadership to perform. MongoDB is hosting an Investor Day at the Nasdaq MarketSite on Tuesday, September 29, from 11:00 am to 3:15 pm ET. The event is intended to provide an in-depth look at the company’s product innovation and long-term strategy for AI-powered retrieval and developer data platforms.

For a company that serves more than 70,000 customers, including approximately 75 percent of the Fortune 100, the loss of a CEO to a direct competitor in the AI space creates a narrative challenge. The interim leadership must now prove that the company’s trajectory remains intact despite the poaching of its top executive.
