Based on the information gathered, the Iranian hacker group known as APT42 targeted high-profile individuals in the political and diplomatic worlds, as well as others with links to the administrations of former U.S. Presidents Joe Biden and Donald Trump.
An investigation revealed that this same hacker group was involved in similar cyber attacks on politicians, diplomats and military personnel, which had been previously reported by tech giants such as Microsoft and Google.
Given heightened security concerns ahead of the U.S. elections, Meta disclosed details of these malicious activities to law enforcement agencies and campaign teams from both the Republican and Democratic parties for the November presidential election.
The hacking group has also targeted individuals outside of political and diplomatic circles, influencing various sectors. In addition, other technology companies have reported similar cyber attacks carried out by APT42.
