US federal authorities are investigating Meta for possible involvement in the sale of drugs.
Prosecutors in the state of Virginia have subpoenaed people and asked questions as part of a criminal investigation into whether the company’s social media platforms facilitated and profited from the illegal sale of drugs, sources told the WSJ. Meta owns Instagram and Facebook.
Prosecutors requested records related to “‘infringing’ drug-related content on Meta’s platforms, and/or the illegal sale of drugs through Meta’s platforms.” The subpoenas were served in 2023. According to sources, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also assisted in the investigation. It is noted that investigations do not always result in official charges.
“Selling illegal drugs is against our policies and we are working to find and remove this content from our services,” said a Meta spokesperson. “Meta actively cooperates with law enforcement to help combat the sale and distribution of illegal drugs.”
